For the first time a gregarious parasitoid belonging to the genus Phaenocarpa Foerster, 1862 (Braconidae: Alysiinae) is reported, and described as P. helophilae spec. nov. from England. The first record of Chloropidae as host for a Phaenocarpa species is given; P. livida (Haliday, 1838) reared from Calamoncosis (Rhaphiopyga) glyceriae Nartshuk, 1958. Sathra debilis Foerster, 1862, is synonymised with P. livida (Haliday). Additionally, Phaenocarpa curticauda spec. nov. from The Netherlands is described and fully illustrated. A lectotype is designated for Alysia pectoralis Zetterstedt, 1838, and Phaenocarpa rufoflava Papp, 1968, is recognised as a valid species. |

The genus Histeromerus Wesmael, 1838 (Braconidae: Histeromerinae) is revised and its species are keyed. The type species is redescribed and fully illustrated. The genus Mithotynia Hedqvist, 1976, is a new junior synonym of Histeromerus, and its type species, M. aptera Hedqvist, 1976, a junior synonym of H. mystacinus Wesmael, 1838. Histeromerus canadensis Ashmead, 1891, is for the first time reported from the Palaearctic region. A lectotype is designated for H. mystacinus Wesmael, 1838. |

One new genus is described: Leptotrema gen. nov.; type-species: Aspilota dentifemur Stelfox, 1943.The genus Dinotrema Foerster, 1862 is given generic status to include the majority of the species of Aspilota auct.; the genus Pterusa Fischer, 1958 is included in the Alysiini. The genus Eusynaldis Zaykov & Fischer, 1982 is synonymized with Aspilota Foerster, 1862 s.s.; Coloboma Foerster, 1862, Prosapha Foerster, 1862 and Synaldis Foerster, 1862 are new synonyms of Dinotrema Foerster, 1862. Synaldis auct. is divided among Aspilota s.s., Eudinostigma Tobias, 1986 and Dinotrema. Aspilota pneumatica Fischer, 1973 is synonymized with Alysia efoveolata Thomson, 1895. With the advent of deep submergence research vessels (DSRVs) biological and ecological studies of ocean deeps have made great strides. Especially these submersibles allowed to conduct physiological and biochemical experiments on benthic fauna directly on the bottom or on board with alive retrieved animals. A second great interest is the possibility to work in chaotic areas and on microenvironments. Without DSRVs most of measurements and observations obtained on hydrothermals vents would had been impossible. We will present the different equipment designed for the two French DSRVs used during the cruises conducted by the Departement "Environnement Profond" de l'IFREMER to study hydrothermal and "normal" deep-sea ecosystems. We will discuss the new devices... |

Biological aspects of Bradybaena similaris (Férussac, 1821) were studied, such as: onset of sexual maturity, occurrence of self-fertilization, oviposition, incubation period, eclosion rate and shell length measurement at different stages of development. It was noted that in isolated B. similaris the minimum and maximum time for reaching sexual maturity were 109 and 180 days, respectively. When kept in groups, the minimum time was 78 days. The occurrence of self-fertilization was observed in 18.4% of specimens. The total number of eggs per oviposition varied from one to 38 (average: 3,5 ± 7,15), the total number of eggs per mollusc varied from one to 39 (average: 7,0 ± 10,21) and the total number of oviposition per mollusc varied form one to six (averege:... |

Biological aspects of Leptinaria unlamellata (d'Orbigny, 1835) were studied, such as: onset of sexual maturity, occurrence of self-fertilization and shell length measurement at different stages of development. In isolated specimens of L. unilamellata, sexual maturity was reached at 74 days (minimum time) and 104 days (maximum time). For the grouped specimens, the minimum time was 71 days. The occurrence of self-fertilization was observed in both species, 100% of specimens. The total numberof young per birth varied from one to 22 (average: 7,35 ± 5,78), the total number of offsprings per mollusc varied from two to eight (average: 4,1 ± 1,41) and total number of young per mollusc varied from five to 46 (average: 30,21 ± 8,08). As to the shell length in... |

ABSTRACT Animal models have been used in experimental research to increase human knowledge and contribute to finding solutions to biological and biomedical questions. However, increased concern for the welfare of the animals used, and a growing awareness of the concept of animal rights, has brought a greater focus on the related ethical issues. In this review, we intend to give examples on how animals are used in the health research related to some major health problems in Brazil, as well as to stimulate discussion about the application of ethics in the use of animals in research and education, highlighting the role of National Council for the Control of Animal Experimentation (Conselho Nacional de Controle de Experimentação Animal - CONCEA) in these... |

Reviews the biology and ecology of oysters, and experimental and culture techniques used in the tropics; describes problems in tropical oyster farming and identifies research needs to further develop this form of aquaculture. Three oyster genera are discussed: Ostrea, Crassostrea and Saccostrea. The advantages and disadvantages of various species of each genus with regard to aquaculture are also described. |
